Honma selected as Chaminade Cross-Country Coach
Feb. 2, 2007
Honolulu, HI- When selecting a coach, success, experience and knowledge of the competitive environment are things that are sought after. Coach Honma, a UH-Hilo Athletics Hall-of Famer, a multiple-time Coach of the year at the conference and state levels, fits the bill. Karl Honma has been named one of the All Time Best Hawaii Coaches and has been inducted to the Big Island Sports Hall of Fame. He has won 17 Big Island Interscholastic Federation Championships, thirteen of those in a row, and four consecutive state championships. "We are pleased to select such a qualified individual to lead our cross-country program" said Chaminade Athletic Director Kaia Hedlund. "We lost a coach in James Oshiro who will certainly be missed, but after an extensive search, we have found someone who we believe will be a great fit at Chaminade". Presently, Coach Honma is a History and AP Psychology teacher at Iolani School and assisted with Hawaii Pacific University Cross Country in 2006. Coach Honma on his hiring, "I am looking forward to the opportunity to be a part of the athletic program here at Chaminade University and I hope to have a positive influence on the student-athletes I am fortunate enough to meet and work with." Chaminade's new cross-country coach has been a prominent member of high school and collegiate cross country in the state of Hawaii for over twenty-five years. Chaminade University competes in the always competitive PacWest Conference with BYU-Hawaii, Dixie State College of Utah, Grand Canyon University, Hawaii Pacific, Notre Dame de Namur and UH-Hilo.
